How can the taste of the scrumptious Hong Kong delicacy – mooncakes – not remind us of home? The story of having mooncakes at Mid-Autumn Festival originates from the Yuan Dynasty where mooncakes played a part in starting a revolution. As people suffered a lot under the Yuan Dynasty, many wanted to revolt but the government’s close monitoring made it hard to exchange messages. It was said that the Han Chinese rebel leader, Liu Bo Wen, gained permission to give mooncakes as gifts to his friends in different areas. Liu asked his subordinates to hide a piece of paper inside the mooncakes with the message to start a revolution on the 15th of August. Eventually, the revolution was successful and the Yuan Dynasty was overthrown. The story speaks to Hongkongers in exile in different and special ways. Hongkongers in Britain will hold a mooncake making class and celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival by making our own mooncakes.
相信不少人離鄉別井都會特別懷念香港美食，八月份中秋臨近，你又有冇諗起月餅呢？民間流傳中秋節食月餅始於元代。當時，中原廣大人民不堪忍受元朝統治階級嘅殘酷統治，紛紛起義抗元。朱元璋聯合各路反抗力量準備起義。但朝庭官兵搜查十分嚴密，傳遞消息非常困難。軍師劉伯溫就諗出一個對策，命令屬下將「八月十五夜起義」嘅紙條收入餅裡面，再派人分頭傳送去各地起義軍，通知佢哋喺八月十五日晚上起義響應。到咗起義嗰日，各路義軍一齊響應，起義軍如星火燎原，好快，徐達就攻下元大都，起義成功。消息傳來，朱元璋即刻傳下口諭，喺即將來臨嘅中秋節，讓全體將士與民同樂。今日喺英國嘅離散香港人睇到呢個傳説真係别有一番感受。英國港僑協會東北分部將舉辦一個月餅製作班，讓我哋一齊整具香港特色嘅奶黃月餅，一同懷念香港美食。
